NYC Moving Guide 2021

Moving–it ain't easy, no matter how many times you’ve done it. Let’s see if we can make it happen:

Plan your Move-in Date

Weekends are a good time to move, but they don’t always coincide with the move in date(usually the 1st of the month). Make sure you check the calendar in advance to see when your move-in date is and plan to move in a few days early or late as needed (you made need approval from the landlord to move in early). Keep in mind the moving could take several days, depending on the vastness of your loot and the distance between your old and new home.

Check your Stuff

Take note of the your old stuff, your new stuff and the stuff that needs to be tossed. It’s also a good idea to measure large furniture and compare it to the hallways/doorways in your new building. Now is the time to check--not halfway up the stairs with a couch on your shoulders.

Find Movers

Moving yourself is always much more stressful and time-consuming than you think. Leave it to the professionals, you won’t regret it! We can recommend moving companies if you unsure which is the best for your needs. You’ll need to arrange a moving date with them a few weeks in advance. They’ll likely ask you about how many boxes and large items you have, how much you would like them to pack, what floor you are on and if you have an elevator for them to use.

Packing Tips

Be prepared! You’ll likely need: Variously-size boxes (you can buy these from a shipping store or re-use some) packing tape box cutters, sharpies for labeling boxes, cleaning supplies (broom, mop, dust pan, sponges, disinfectant, paper towels), trash bags and cash for tipping the movers. We recommend packing  your clothing in suitcases and separating the off-season stuff from what you’ll need when you move in. Let the movers to take care of the more fragile items such as dishes, cutlery and electronics. It’s a good idea to label boxes containing items you want access to as soon as you move in (e.g. bedding, towels, pillows, plates, cutlery).Pack a backpack or duffle bag with your valuables to keep them secure.Make sure you read up on how to legally discard unwanted items. Seal your mattress in a mattress bag which you can purchase at your local hardware store.

Moving Day

You definitely want to supervise the movers as they work to make sure you know where everything is when it’s picked up and so that you can direct them where to drop everything off when you get to your new place. Don’t be afraid to tell them to move things around–it’s their job! You may be able to hitch a ride to the new apartment in the moving van, but don’t count on it. If you don’t have a car, make sure you plan getting a ride there whether it’s through uber or a friend. You probably don’t want to schlep the stuff you’ll take with you on the subway or bus. Make sure you leave your movers a tip based on how much work they’ve done and how helpful they’ve been. That’s it! Good luck getting settled in and a very warm welcome to your new place from your friends at RENT NY!
